What it means to be fruitful?

The word “fruitful” is one of the words that people have misunderstood for many years. This has led to so many people dying without fulfilling their purpose.

The word “fruitful” appeared first in Genesis 1:22 and also Genesis 1:28 after God created animals and man. If we take a closer look at this word as expressed in different parts of the Bible and as used by Jesus, you will notice that the word “fruitful” has a literal and figurative meaning.

The literal meaning talks about procreation (or giving birth to offspring), while the figurative meaning talks about productivity (or yielding result or profit)

A lot of people understood the literal meaning and are practicing it, but only a few understand the figurative meaning and little out of this few practice it.

Many people procreate, but only a few are productive. Because of this, we have so many people in world who rely on a few productive ones to survive.

God does not want us to just procreate, He wants us to produce results according to His deposit in us.

In the new testament, God never have to remind man of the need to procreate. But He constantly reminded us the need to be productive.

Note this: Adam did not procreate in the garden, but he was productive. He organized the garden, named the animals. Which means that being fruitful is not solely tied to procreation, but transcends it much more.

Productivity is a function of work and most people naturally hates work.

When Jesus came to the world, He told the disciples in Joh 15:8 GW that, you give glory to my Father when you produce a lot of fruit and therefore show that you are my disciples.

The fruit Jesus was talking about here is the figurative one – productivity.

One great way Jesus communicated with people was the use of what they are familiar with. He used agriculture because the people were mostly farmers.

God wants us to produce result according to His deposit in us. Jesus emphasized this a lot during His earthly ministry.

“I am the vine. You are the branches. Those who live in me while I live in them will produce a lot of fruit. But you can’t produce anything without me. (Joh 15:5 GW)

You are expected to bear fruit in every area of your life. That is God’s expectation on your life and it is God’s delight.

Paul the apostle did not have any physical child, yet he was one of the most fruitful character in the bible.

Am I saying people should not give birth, No. what am saying is that our population should be an advantage and not a problem. So, instead of increasing our population, our focus should be on increasing our productivity.

That is what God meant when He blessed man and commanded them to be fruitful i.e. Population with a commensurate productivity or productivity that outmatches population.

Fruitfulness is a function of nature. Mango tree produces mango fruit, while palm tree produces palm fruit. Among mango trees, we have over 500 various species known, and they are distinguished by their fruit.

So also, God created all men different and as such, we are expected to produce fruit according to our kind.

The bible speaking in Mat 7:16-20 MKJV, You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? Even so every good tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruits, nor can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that does not bring forth good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore, by their fruits you shall know them.

Please understand that what you produce is a function of the stuff inside of you. God created all of us in a unique way so that we can produce unique fruits. My fruit will be different from yours and your fruit will be different from mine.

Also, you must understand that when it comes to fruitfulness, our lives are multi-faceted. We have family, business, academic life and so on. God wants you to be fruitful in every area of your life. There are great treasures or seed in you that God deposited there so that you might produce fruit from them.

Please, don’t just increase the world’s population without increasing its value by being productive. Be productive by giving expression to the seed of God in you.

God has placed a seed in you which if you allow will produce great results. Things like inventions that will better the lives of man. Whether it is new songs, new organizations, technologies, systems and so on. What God expects from you and which He delights in is that you are fruitful.

Here are some types of fruit God expected man to produce

  1. Fruit of your body or womb Psa 127:3 KJV Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
  2. Fruit of your lips Heb 13:15 KJV By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
  3. Fruit of your hands Pro 31:16 KJV She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
  4. Fruit of your life Mat 7:16-17 NET 16 You will recognize them by their fruit. Grapes are not gathered from thorns or figs from thistles, are they? 17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.

People should be able to see God’s character in you Mat 3:8 KJV Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

Lastly, I want you to know that salvation is the only way through which a fruitful life can be possible. With Jesus in your life, you are empowered to produce lots of fruit. So, give your life to Him right now and watch your life turn around.

May the Lord help you.
