Living in total health is a choice you have to make if you want to be free from sickness. You don’t get healed or live in good health by wishing or being idle; it takes determination backed by action. Good health will not come to you unless you make the choice, which must be based on the word of God.
The Healing at the Pool of Bethesda: A Story of Choice and Healing (John 5:2–9)
In the city of Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, lay a pool known as Bethesda. This pool held significance, as it was believed that at certain times, an angel of the Lord would stir up the waters, bringing healing to whoever stepped in first after the stirring. Among the multitude of sick people lying by this pool, there was a man who had suffered from a chronic ailment for thirty-eight long years.
The Power of Choice in Receiving Healing
Jesus, noticing the man’s condition, asked a pivotal question: “Do you want to become well?” This inquiry was an invitation for this man to make a choice, an opportunity to express true earnestness in seeking healing. The man’s response, citing his inability to reach the water when it stirred, reflected a mindset entrenched in limitation. It wasn’t until he chose to act upon Jesus’ command that healing manifested.
Although Jesus desired the man’s healing, He wouldn’t act without the man’s consent. The man’s reply, “Sir, I have nobody,” revealed why he remained in that debilitated state for 38 years. Without Jesus’ intervention, he would likely have persisted in his condition until death.

Jesus, knowing the man’s state of mind, offered him a fresh opportunity to choose. He disregarded the man’s earlier response and gave a clear directive. Jesus commanded him, “Get up! Pick up your bed and walk!” This was an offer of healing, a directive to make a choice to act upon Jesus’ words. When the sick man acted upon Jesus’ words, healing flowed. He was instantly healed and regained his strength.
The Word of God: The Path to Total Health
The Word of God is powerful enough to terminate any form of health challenge. Many people are living in sickness because they have chosen the ways of men over the ways of God. Total health is a free gift from God available only to those who will receive it.
There are misconceptions about receiving healing and staying in total health. No matter how much you desire good health, it will only come by choosing the right way. God doesn’t want to heal you anyhow; He has a way through which He sends healing to His people.
Choosing God’s Way for Total Health
Below are procedures for choosing God’s way for total health:
- Have Faith in God’s Word: (Mark 11:24) “Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Have faith in God’s promises for healing and health. Your faith in God and His words must come alive if you desire total health.
- Obedience to His Commands: (Exodus 15:26) “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.” Obey His instructions for healthy living. Obedience to God and His words facilitates good health to our body. His words are health to all our flesh. You won’t know how much power God’s word carries until you start living by it.
- Renewing your Mind: (Romans 12:2) “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” Align your thoughts with God’s truth about health. You must allow God’s word to transform your thoughts as far as good health is concerned. Wrong thoughts of fear, depression and sickness must be dispelled through the word of God and replaced with words of hope, freedom and health.
Choosing total health through God’s Word involves an active decision to align with His principles for well-being. The story of the man at the Pool of Bethesda teaches us the significance of choosing faith and obedience to God’s instructions for receiving and maintaining good health. It’s time to embrace God’s way, having faith in His promises, and actively choosing to walk in total health according to His Word.
